Southeast Asia Data Insight (Year-End 2019)
Fund managers raised USD2.3b in 2019, the region’s highest annual total since 2013
Fund managers raised USD2.3 billion for Southeast Asia-focused funds in 2019, led by the USD500 million final close of Southern Capital Group’s fourth buyout fund. Over the past six years, PE strategies have accounted for 65% of the total capital raised for Southeast Asia. However, during this same timeframe, venture capital (VC) has grown from a nascent strategy into the region’s most dynamic, with USD960 million raised in 2019, roughly 42% of the year’s fundraising total. GPs continue to see an abundance of momentum and opportunity from their existing portfolios, as multiple follow-on funds closed in 2019, including Jungle Ventures III and East Ventures VI. The launch of Southeast Asia’s first venture debt fund, from Genesis Alternative Ventures, illustrates the growing diversification of strategies and resources offered to startups.
